Biography

Born near Edinburgh, I became interested in photography after leaving school, during a period of economic recession, a happy coincidence as it gave me lots of time to explore my new hobby. I soon found myself working in a camera shop, blowing most of my wages on the latest stock. Keen to take things more seriously, I went to night school specifically to get the one grade I needed to access Napier College in Edinburgh (the main centre for photographic learning in Scotland at the time). I got the grade but found I was too much in debt to leave full time employment, so my photography remained just an enjoyable hobby for many more years. I shot mostly landscapes and as I started to travel further overseas, my focus broadened to encompass travel photography, especially where people featured. After many years of making pictures for myself I eventually became a regularly commissioned photographer with the travel publisher Insight Guides and for several years, a brand ambassador + visionary with Olympus cameras. During the past few years I've won a number of national awards, developed a love of shooting location portraiture and a deepening fascination with the human face. I was commissioned to photograph a number of vintage festivals around the UK over a four year period for the designer Wayne Hemingway.  My two solo exhibitions have focussed on behind the scenes fashion work and travel photography in India.

I occasionally run domestic and international training workshops for travel trade partners like Kuoni and for private individuals.

In addition to my photographic pursuits, I oversee a corporate identity company I started over 25 years ago.
